Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠮᠣᠳᠤ (modu), from Middle Mongol ᠮᠣᠳᠤᠨ (modun), Proto-Mongolic *modun. Cognate with Khamnigan Mongol модо (modo), Buryat модон (modon), Kalmyk модн (modn), Dongxiang mutun, etc.
