Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Mongolic *sana-, from Proto-Turkic *sāna- (to count, determine) < *sān (number, count) or directly from *sān- (to be counted, regarded) all of which are ultimately derived from *sā- (to think, count, consider). Compare Dongxiang sana, Buryat һанаха (hanaxa).

Also compare Turkish saymak (to count, regard), san (reputation), sanmak (to suppose, reckon), Kyrgyz саноо (sanoo, to count).

Compare typologically Russian счита́ть (sčitátʹ), English count, reckon.
