Borrowed from Classical Persian تعلیم (ta'līm), itself from Arabic تَعْلِيم (taʕlīm), from the Arabic root ع ل م (ʕ l m, knowing; knowledge). See also عِلْم (ʻilm, knowledge) and other Urdu terms derived from the Arabic root ع ل م. Compare Marathi तालीम (tālīm, practice; rehearsal; gymnasium).
