From Middle Persian [script needed] (kʾl /kār/, work, deed, affair). Ultimately a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *kʷer- (to do, make, construct). Related to کردن(kardan), پیکر(peykar), etc. Cognates include Sanskrit -कार (-kāra).
