Cognate with Avestan 𐬘𐬇𐬥𐬌 (jə̄ni), 𐬘𐬀𐬌𐬥𐬌 (jaini, woman), Persian زن (zan), Ancient Greek γῠνή (gunḗ), Baluchi جن (jan), Russian жена́ (žená), English queen. Compare also English gyno-, an Ancient Greek borrowing. Doublet of ग्ना (gnā́).
