From Proto-Indo-Iranian (compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(gayo) (accusative [script needed] ‎(ǰyātum, life)), probably from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *gʷih₃wo-teh₂ (compare Old Church Slavonic животъ ‎(životŭ, life), Lithuanian gyvatà ‎(life) Ancient Greek βίοτος ‎(bíotos), Latin vīta, Old Irish bethu, Irish beatha, Welsh bywyd ‎(life)), ultimately from *gʷeih₃w- ‎(to live), compare *gʷih₃wós ‎(alive).
