Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀯​𑀇 (pāva​i), from Sanskrit प्रापयति (prāpayati, causes to reach, attain, obtain), from प्राप् (prāp, to reach, attain, obtain), a compound of प्र- (pra-, prepositional prefix) +‎ आप् (āp, to reach, obtain).
