Etymology
[edit]Compound of बुध (budha, "Mercury") + वार (vā́ra, "day"). Ultimately a semantic loan from Ancient Greek ἡμέρα Ἑρμοῦ (hēméra Hermoû), compare also Latin diēs Mercuriī and Old English wōdnesdæġ (whence English Wednesday). The association of the seven week days with the seven classical planets is first attested in the Gupta period.
