    Etymology 5

    Vṛddhi derivative of वर (vára, enclosing, checking). However, Mayrhofer prefers to implicitly separate the "gate, doorway" sense from the other senses and derives the "gate" sense from a dialectal variant of द्वार् (dvā́r, door).[4]

    There may be semantic conflation and contribution of the "choose" and "cover, restrain" senses of the root वृ (vṛ) to this term, particularly with certain senses such as "fixed or appointed time".
