Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰārás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰārás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰorós, from the root *bʰer- (“to bear, carry”). Cognate with Proto-Iranian *bāráh (whence Avestan 𐬠𐬁𐬭𐬀 (bāra), Old Median *-βārə́h) and Ancient Greek φορός (phorós, “bearing, carrying, tending”).
