Learned borrowing from Sanskrit समुद्र (samudrá, sea). Cognate with Old Khmer samudra, sramaddha; Modern Khmer សមុទ្រ (saʼmot). Compare Pali samudda; Modern Khmer សមុទ្ទ (saʼmot).
