Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰmotᴰˢ¹ (all gone) (Jonsson, 1991). Compare Middle Chinese 歿 (MC mwot, “to die”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩫᨯ, Lao ໝົດ (mot), ᦷᦖᧆ (ṁod), Tai Dam ꪹꪢꪸꪒ, Shan မူတ်း (múut), Southern Thai เหม็ด.
