Borrowing from Sanskrit आचार्य (ācārya, preceptor; teacher); perhaps via Old Khmer ʼācāryya, ʼācārya, ʼācāryya (spiritual preceptor; instructor, pedagogue, professor, teacher; expert). Cognate with Khmer អាចារ្យ (’achary), អាចរិយ (’achrĭy); Lao ອາຈານ ('ā chān).
