တော်

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

According to STEDT:

The "rumbling noise", "stop", and "honorific" senses are not listed by STEDT, though the "honorific" sense could be an extension of the "suitable, clever" sense. Note similarities to Old Chinese 調 (OC *dɯːw, *dɯːws, *tɯw, “to adjust, train; matching; style”), though the vowels do not seem to match.
