Etymology[edit]

From *სტარო (*sťaro) +‎ შინ- (şin-, to remember) +‎ -ა (-a, -ance). *სტარო (*sťaro) is from Ancient Greek σταυρός (staurós, cross, crucifix); the Elevation of the Holy Cross is celebrated on September 14. Compare მარჲაშინა (maryaşina).
