Etymology[edit]

Compound of 大人(おとな) (otona, adult) + () (kai, buying). The kai changes to gai due to rendaku (連濁).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (Tokyo) とながい [òtónágáí] (Heiban – [0])
  • IPA(key): [o̞to̞na̠ɡa̠i]

Noun[edit]

大人(おとな)() (otonagaiおとながひ (otonagafi)?

  1. (slang) Of an adult, buying (chiefly childish) things in great amounts (due to newfound purchasing power).
    • [1]
      もちろん(いま)なら()えるぞ。あの(ころ)()しかった、(れい)のクロモリの(さい)(じょう)()(しゅ)だって、なんということはない。いわゆる「大人(おとな)()」ができる。
      Mochiron ima nara kaeru zo. Ano koro hoshikatta, rei no kuromori no saijō kishu datte, nantoiu koto wa nai. Iwayuru “otonagai” ga dekiru.
      Of course, you can buy it now. That top-of-the-line chromoly model you wanted back then isn't anything big. Now you can buy all you want.

Verb[edit]

大人(おとな)()する (otonagai surusuru (stem 大人(おとな)() (otonagai shi), past 大人(おとな)()した (otonagai shita))

  1. (slang) To do the above.
