Etymology

Borrowed from Chinese 天長節天长节 (tiānchángjié). First used by Emperor Kōnin of the Nara Period to refer to his birthday and those of subsequent emperors, and later disused. The term was revived during the reign of Emperor Meiji, nearly a millennium later.
