[edit]Unorthodox variant of 巢 (cháo) found in a moveable type copy of Biographies of Exemplary Women 《列女傳》. First attested in 《宋元以來俗字譜》, a variant forms dictionary compiled in 1930 that records unorthodox forms (俗字 (súzì)) that have existed since the Song dynasty.

From Old Japanese. Found in the Kojiki of 712,[1] and included in the Man'yōshū with the phonetic man'yōgana spelling 須 (su).[2] In turn, from Proto-Japonic *su.
