Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *m·ru) : semantic + phonetic (OC *m·ru, *m·rus).

Etymology

The botanist Li Shizhen suggests that is the same as (OC *m·ru, *m·rus, “lump, tumour”), as the pomegranate fruit resembles cancerous outgrowths on the body.
