From Old Japanese. Cognate with Kunigami ひかーりん (hikaːrin)しかーりん (ɕikaːriɴ), Okinawan ちくぃーゆん (tɕikwiːyuɴ), Miyako きぅかいいぅ (kɿkaiɿ). Classical form of Modern Japanese 聞こえる (kikoeru).

Derived from the 未然形 (mizenkei, irrealis form) of 聞く (kiku, to hear, listen) kika + (-yu, attributive suffix).[1][2]
