The two forms of this compound 連合／连合 (liánhé) and 聯合／联合 (liánhé) are homophonous in Mandarin and Sino-Japanese, but not in Cantonese. Hong Kong Chinese and Cantonese strongly prefer 聯合／联合 (lyun4 hap6); the form 連合／连合 (lin4 hap6) is only used when Mainland Chinese or Japanese texts are quoted verbatim and pronounced as written.
