Etymology

From Middle Korean ᄃᆡ골 (tòykwòl). The noun suffix 이 (-i) was later attached. Cognate with Korean 대가리 (daegari).

The word is generally considered a compound, but the etymology is not fully clear. The second component is probably Middle Korean 골〯 (kwǒl, “brain”), whereas words such as 데망셍이 (demangseng'i) and 데멩이 (demeng'i) seem to reflect the first component in isolation.

데가리 (degari)

1. an animal's head

   Synonym: 데멩이 (demeng'i)

   쉐 데가리를 잡앙 끗으민 뒈주.

   Swe degarireul jabang kkeuseumin dweju.

   You can grab the cow's head and drag it.

2. (vulgar) a person's head

   Synonyms: 데멩이 (demeng'i), 데망셍이 (demangseng'i)

   암만 화난들 데가리를 내박아 부리민 뒈여?

   Amman hwanandeul degarireul naebaga burimin dweyeo?

   No matter how mad you are, you cannot punch their head.
