From Pali ratana (gem; jewel), from Sanskrit रत्न (ratna, gem; jewel); possibly via Old Khmer ratna, ratana°, rata, ratta, ratra (jewel, gem, precious stone; anything precious). Cognate with Modern Khmer រត្ន (rŭətnɔɔ).
