Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *ɡʷriːl) : semantic 水 (“water”) + phonetic 隹 (OC *tjul)
Etymology
Yang (1999) suggests a derivation from the bird (隹) totem worship of the Huaiyi that inhabited the Huai river basin.
Pronunciation
