Proper noun[edit]
Jemen m or n (proper noun, strong, genitive Jemens or Jemen, plural Jemen)
- Yemen (a country in Western Asia)
Usage notes[edit]
- The word is sometimes used without a definite article (as in English): Jemen, in Jemen. In this case, the genitive is always Jemens, for example Jemens Hauptstadt – "Yemen’s capital".
- More commonly, however, the definite article is used with the name: der Jemen, im Jemen. In this case, the genitive usually is des Jemen, although des Jemens is nowadays also considered correct: die Hauptstadt des Jemen(s) – "the capital of Yemen".
- The plural Jemen refers to North Yemen (German: Nordjemen) and South Yemen (German: Südjemen).
