Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈjeːmən/, /ˈjɛmən/

Proper noun[edit]

Jemen m, n ‎(genitive Jemens or Jemen, plural Jemen)

  1. Yemen

Usage notes[edit]

  • The word is sometimes used without a definite article (as in English): Jemen, in Jemen. In this case, the genitive is always Jemens, for example Jemens Hauptstadt – "Yemen’s capital".
  • More commonly, however, the definite article is used with the name: der Jemen, im Jemen. In this case, the genitive usually is des Jemen, although des Jemens is nowadays also considered correct: die Hauptstadt des Jemen(s) – "the capital of Yemen".
  • The plural Jemen refers to North Yemen (German: Nordjemen) and South Yemen (German: Südjemen).
