Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *dʰewsom. The root, *dʰews-, also led to Lithuanian dvēsti, Latvian dvēsele, Proto-Slavic *duša (whence Russian душа́ (dušá)), and possibly Latin bēstia.
