From Middle High German sorge (“sorrow; worry; care”), from Old High German sorga, sworga (“sorrow; worry”), from Proto-Germanic *surgō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swergʰ- (“watch over, worry; be ill, suffer”). Cognate with Hunsrik Sorrich, Dutch zorg, English sorrow, Danish sorg.
