From Middle High German sorge (sorrow; worry; care), from Old High German sorga, sworga (sorrow; worry), from Proto-Germanic *surgō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swergʰ- (watch over, worry; be ill, suffer). Cognate with Dutch zorg, English sorrow, Danish sorg.
