Uncertain; possibly borrowed from Latin canna (reed, reed pipe)[1], or perhaps from Proto-Germanic *kannǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *gandʰ-ō, from *gandʰ- (vessel), compare Middle Irish gand (vessel).[2]
