From Proto-Finnic *airo, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *airō (“oar”). Cognates include Estonian aer, Swedish åra. First attested in Ericus Schroderus: Lexicon Latino-Scondicum ("Latin-Scandinavian Dictionary", 1637).
