apology +‎ -ize, from ἀπολογία (apología, a speech in defense), from ἀπολογέομαι (apologéomai, to speak in one’s defense), from ἀπόλογος (apólogos, an account, story), compound of ἀπο- (apo-, from, off) and λόγος (lógos, speech); compare also ἀπολογίζομαι (apologízomai, to render an account).
