Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Chut [Mày] patĭŋ³ (Babaev & Samarina, 2018).

Formally, this looks like a causative prefixed (Proto-Vietic prefix *pr- ~ *p-) derivative of a root. This root is probably of Sinitic origin and related to the modern Sino-Vietnamese morpheme định (), i.e. "to make fixed" or "to cause to be fixed". Another possibility is that the root is related to đính () instead.
