Determiner

ez (demonstrative)

  1. (used before a noun phrase with a definite article, gets the case of the noun phrase) this
Ez a ház nagyon szép.This house is very beautiful.

ez esetben (equivalent to ebben az esetben)in this case

az ez évi díjak[“the”] this year's fees
    ez alkalommalon this occasion
ez idő szerintat this time, at present, presently
ez idő tájtabout this time, in these days

Usage notes

  • In the first case (which is by far more common), it is declined according to the noun phrase it is applied to:
Ezekben a házakban magyarok laknak. In these houses, Hungarian people live.
  • Because ez takes a definite article (the) and van (“is, to be”) is omitted in cases of qualification, some terms are ambiguous:
Ez a ház” can mean both “this house” as a phrase and “This is the house” as a whole sentence. The same ambiguity may arise with az.
