Inherited from Middle High German vriuntlich, vrūntlich, friuntlich, from Old High German friuntlīh, from Proto-Germanic *frijōndlīkaz, equivalent to Freund +‎ -lich. Cognate with Dutch vriendelijk, English friendly.
