From Hindi ग्वार (gvār), from Sanskrit गोपाली (gopālī, kind of cucumber), shortened from गोपालकर्कटी (gopālakarkaṭī, cowherder's cucumber), from गोपाल (gopāla, cowherd) + कर्कटी (karkaṭī, cucumber) (see Latin cucumis and cucurbita).
