Probably from Spanish honda, fonda (“sling”), from Latin funda (“hand-sling”); or from Spanish hondón (“eye of a needle”), from hondo (“bottom; deep, profound”) (from Latin fundus (“bottom, lowest part”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰ-(m)n-o, from *bʰudʰmḗn (“bottom”)) + -ón (“suffix indicating a similar (usually larger) object”).
