Usage notes

• In many situations, this word and to are interchangeable:

  nhà to mà chẳng ai ở ― a big house where no one lives in

  căn nhà lớn trên đỉnh đồi ― a big house on top of the hill

• However, lớn is also specifically used for things or concepts that are intangible or not visually perceivable, although not necessarily abstract nouns:

  nguồn cảm hứng lớn (never *nguồn cảm hứng to) ― a big inspiration

  dấu hỏi lớn ― a big question (figure of speech)

  dấu hỏi to ― a big question mark (like one written on a sheet of paper)
