From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Japanese 将軍 (shōgun), from an abbreviation of 征夷大将軍 (Seii Taishogun) which means "General who overcomes the barbarians", from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Chinese 將軍 (tsjang-kjun "leader of troops", "general") (whence also Mandarin 將軍/将军 (jiāngjūn)).
