[edit]Contraction of *vivipera, an alteration of vivipara, the feminine of vīviparus (literally “livebearing”), referring to the young being born alive and whole (as opposed to being formed in a laid egg), from vīvus (“alive”) + pariō (“to give birth”) + -us (noun-forming suffix).
