From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Balto-Slavic *źemē, compare zem, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm. Compare Lithuanian žẽmė, Polish ziemia, Russian земля́ (zemljá), Persian زمین (zamin) Latin humus, Ancient Greek χθών (khthṓn).
