Etymology

17th century, alteration of earlier ähnlichen, from Middle High German anelīchen, which is equivalent to ähnlich (similar) +‎ -en. The contemporary form is possibly based on the association of ähnlich with the etymologically unrelated Ahn (ancestor), thus derived as Ahn +‎ -eln; compare French s’apparenter à.
