[edit]Derived from Old Norse Vanadis, (one of the names of Freyja, goddess of beauty) + -ium (chemical element suffix), in reference to the many beautifully colored chemical compounds it produces. The Norse name is a compound of the names Vana (from vanr (“lacking, missing”)) and Dis (from dís (“goddess”)).
