Etymology

From Phoenician 𐤇 (ḥ, “ḥēt”). The letter was initially named ἧτα (hêta) and represented the rough breathing. Speakers of psylotic dialects would come to see /ɛː/ as the initial sound, which became its new sound value due to acrophony.

Usage notes

The basic acrophonic units are Ι 1, 𐅃 5, Δ 10, Η 100, Χ 1000 and Μ 10,000. Η is iterated for ΗΗ 200, ΗΗΗ 300 and ΗΗΗΗ 400, and combines with 𐅃 for 500.
