Komi-Zyrian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Permic *vɛr. Cognates include Udmurt вар (var). Further origin is uncertain:
- Probably from Proto-Uralic *orja (“slave”), whence also Finnish orja and Erzya уре (ure).
- Alternatively, from an Indo-European language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wiHrós (“man”). Compare Latin vir and Sanskrit वीर (vīra).
