From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Slavic *kolti by means of liquid metathesis. Cognate with Slovene kláti, Bulgarian коля (kolja), Russian колоть (kolotʹ), Slovak klať. Non-Slavic cognates include Latin per-cello, Old Irish cellach (strife, contention), Old Prussian preicalis (anvil).
