Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bayakı, from *baya (previously mentioned, recent, former) + *ok (emphasis postposition)[1]. Cognate with Azerbaijani bayağı, Kazakh баяғы (baäğy), Karakhanid بَیا اُقْ (bayā oq), Kyrgyz баякы (bayakı), Southern Altai байагы (bayagï), Uyghur بايا (baya) and boyagi.
