From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hántaras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hántaras, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁énteros (“inner, what is inside”), an adjective formed from the adverb *h₁enter (“between”) (whence also अन्तर् (antár)), possibly conflated with *h₂énteros (“other, beyond”). Cognate with Old Latin *interus (whence Latin interior (“inner, interior”), intrā (“inside, within”)), Ancient Greek ἔντερον (énteron, “intestine, bowel”).
