Hindi[edit]

Hindi verb set
खुलना (khulnā)
खोलना (kholnā)
खुलवाना (khulvānā)

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀮𑁆𑀮𑁆 (*kholl, to open), of unknown further origin. Cognate with Nepali खोल्नु (kholnu).[1]

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Prakrit [script needed] (*khōla, cavity, hollow) (whence Hindi खोर (khor, cave) and Sanskrit खोलि (kholi, quiver) are the entries right before *𑀔𑁄𑀮𑁆𑀮𑁆 in CDIAL, and seem to have similar connotations of "hollow opening". Perhaps they're related? The phonetic variation of *khōla and its relatives suggests a borrowing from a local language like Dravidian or Munda.”

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (Delhi Hindi) IPA(key): /kʰoːl.nɑː/, [kʰoːl.näː]
