Hindi[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Hindi verb set
दिखना (dikhnā)
देखना (dekhnā)
दिखाना (dikhānā)
दिखवाना (dikhvānā)

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀤𑁂𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀤𑀺 (dekkhadi), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀤𑁂𑀔𑀢𑀺 (dekhati /dekkhati/), 𑀤𑀔𑀢𑀺 (dakhati /dakkhati/), from Sanskrit *देक्षति (dekṣati), *दृक्षति (dṛkṣati), somehow related to the root दृश् (dṛś). Cognate with Nepali देख्नु (dekhnu), Bengali দেখা (dekha), Sinhalese දකිනවා (dakinawā).

Turner suggests that -e- developed from analogy with Sanskrit प्रेक्षते (prekṣate, to see),[1] which is from प्रेक्ष् (prekṣ, to look, regard), a compound of प्र- (pra-) + ईक्ष् (īkṣ, to see, look).
