From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mánas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mánas, from Proto-Indo-European *ménos, from *men- (to think). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬥𐬀𐬵‎ (manah‎), Ancient Greek μένος (ménos), Latin mēns.
